What Song Does Rick Springfield Sing on General Hospital?

The name of the song is "Who Killed Rock-n-Roll?", and a video clip of the performance is available on YouTube.

Rick Springfield fans might not agree with this assessment, but it was a questionable choice under the circumstances. The song is part of a CD scheduled to be released later this year, and thus unknown to General Hospital fans and Rick Springfield fans from the 80s who haven't kept up with the rocker.

While it made sense with the story line (Springfield was doing double duty as his character from the 80s, Dr. Noah Drake, and an Australian rock star named Eli Love) that the song performed shouldn't be recognizably Rick Springfield, those who clamored to no avail to hear Springfield sing on General Hospital the first time around were undoubtedly looking for one of his hits.

To Springfield's credit, he declined to perform on the show in the 80s--at the height of his dual popularity as soap star and chart-topping Grammy winner--because it was inconsistent with his physician character. It took a look-alike character to bring Springfield to the stage on GH, and while the storyline might have been a bit of a stretch, it was fairly standard soap opera fare and did address Springfield's long-standing concern.

I have to agree with you in hindsight and I am a fan. Initially,I thought it was a great idea as the new album seemed to be forthcoming at that time. It's a great song. I think that this appearance and performance of the song will be long forgotten by the time the album sees the light of day. His career seems to be fraught with missed opportunities in the last couple of years. It seems that his management has trouble timing appearances to coincide with the release of new material. He appeared on the Oprah show last week. Too bad he didn't have a new album to show off. I think you are correct in stating that he would have been better served singing one of his old standards.

I agree as well. I'm a Rick fan and I knew ahead of time what he would be performing and was quite happy with the whole storyline once it played out. I was worried though about how it would seem to see him finally sing on the show, as I've always felt these two parts of his life probably should not "mix." But I think it worked out pretty well.

As for the timing...I have mixed feelings about it actually. I love the new song, and was quite happy he got to 'sport' his new tune (thank God it wasn't the usual, as in Jessie's Girl). But I couldn't agree more with what was said here. It was poorly timed since the new CD isn't due out until fall (Which is now the case. Originally it was Spring, which was still off target and didn't line up close enough to the GH performance).

Oh and yes...I also agree on the Oprah show. I loved seeing him with Oprah and it was much deserved for Rick to appear on such a popular show. The man still ROCKS! But again...off the mark. No new stuff to talk about or sing. If timed right, that may have shot his new CD sales through the roof. I just don't understand why the timing of these things is always off, from a promotion standpoint. Makes no sense to me...

I think it was a good choice of song in that it let people know that Rick is still 'out there' and performing new music. However, I agree with the others who have commented here about it being a wasted promotional opportunity. Not only did Rick NOT have a new album to promote, but GH totally dropped the storlyine the day the episode aired. The single was not released to radio either, only iTunes. Did anyone else hear that sound of a ball dropping?

I also think that someone dropped a ball somewhere for the Oprah appearance last month as well. Oprah gave the audience the remastered "Working Class Dog". The 25th anniversary of that was a year and a half ago! What about Rick's latest release... Christmas with You??? Granted it's a holiday album, but you don't have to buy holiday music just in December, right? Or maybe it was just another poorly-timed appearance.
